Convolute Wheel

Convolute Wheel
Product Details:

If you are into metal fabrication and you are looking for a heavy deburring, edge breaking, and parting line removal tool to do the work, try this excellent convolute wheel.

The super fiber non-woven abrasive convolute wheel is used from light to heavy precision deburring, blending, finishing, polishing, and cleaning.

Convolute wheels are made from wrapping and bonding web material infused with resin bond and abrasive grains around a center core. This will sustain and provide long life for heavy deburring work.

Convolute wheels are used with lubricants and coolants for automatic or semi-automatic operations. The use of lubricant in the process is highly recommended as it will decrease the heat and improve the surface finish and luster. You may use lubricants like water-soluble oil or straight oil. Convolute wheel is softer and suitable for fine finishing. It can also be run in one direction. Materials used for super fiber non-woven abrasive convolute wheel are silicon carbide, aluminum oxide, ceramic alumina, and diamond.

Features of Convolute Wheel

  • Adaptable wheel density. The wheel density can be adjusted according to the type of deburring. Soft wheel density for better conformability, while hard wheel density is for heavy-duty deburring and polishing.
  • The extra-durable web makes it more ideal for blending applications, strong resin provides resiliency and a longer span of life.
  • Premium medium grit aluminum oxide grain generates uniform satin and antique finishes
  • Uniform grain dispersion and coating clean and condition the workpiece without gouging or changing its dimension
  • Highly efficient and recommended for decorative finishing, blending, and final finishing.

Detailed Description about Convolute Wheel

Convolute Wheel

The convolute wheel is made up of resin bond and abrasive grains around a center core which are wrapped and bonded with web material. This kind of wheel gives off high resistance to wear and conveys a glossy finish to any metal components. The face of the convolute wheel is the side used for grinding. It is mainly used in metal fabrication. How does it work? The non-women abrasives in the convolute wheel remove a small amount of material that provides a smooth finish on metal parts. It is used from light to heavy precision deburring, blending, finishing, polishing, and cleaning.

Convolute Wheel Applications

A typical application of a convolute wheel includes polishing, deburring, and finishing metallic and non-metallic components.

Here are some of its applications:

  • Cleaning and Finishing: Removal of Rust and Oxides. Blending weld areas on stainless steel to  finish, hairline finish, or matt finish. Also, it generates decorative finishes.
  • Deburring, Blending, and Polishing: Weld polishing, edge radiusing, and surface roughness reduction. Finishing in centerless applications and burr removal.
  • Surface Preparation. Dent remover on aluminum sheets. Blending of coated beltlines in the hand tool industry.

Features and Benefits of Convolute Wheel

Convolute Wheel is a waterproof wheel and can be used in wet or dry cases. It has this dense web construction (Density 9) which is applicable for heavy-duty deburring and extends its life span. It also has dense web construction (Density 8) which is used for light-duty deburring and clearing.

To ensure the high-efficiency result, maximum life span, and surface conditioning result, you have to take note of these awesome tips:

  • Run the convolute wheel in its prescribed direction. Use the arrow on the side of the wheel to know the direction/path on where to run the wheel.
  • Consider the wheel speed. It creates a big impact on the finished metal. Faster wheel speed will give you a finer finish while slow wheel speed might give you a coarser finish.
  • Take note of the surface speed range. Avoid exceeding the RPM rating of the wheel to ensure performance.

Before you can buy anything from the store, make sure that you know perfectly the right convolute wheel for your abrasive project. Here are some things you can take note of to choose the perfect convolute wheel.

Four Steps in choosing the right Convolute Wheel product

  1. Check if you fall into the 80 percent range. Check if your application needs a normal amount of blending, deburring, and finishing. Check if the amount of material that has been removed fairly is minimal. If you will be needing heavy deburring or you will be doing a special finishing process for your metal parts, then it would be much better to get additional options. But if you are within the 80 percent range, then you can proceed to the next steps.
  2. Identify the abrasive grain type that describes your requirement. What abrasive grain type do you work on? If you are dealing with ferrous metals, the aluminum oxide convolute wheel with the white core is highly recommended. But if you are working on non-ferrous metal, then you may use a silicon carbide convolute wheel with a core in the center that is color-coded black.
  3. Identify the best grit level for your application. Always remember that convolute wheels come in a range of grit sizes. Identify the appropriate grit level the wheel will sustain its efficiency during the metalwork process. If you are doing a middle-of-the-road way of blending, then apply a fine-grit level. Very-fine grit level is applied when you want a more delicate finish. Lastly, if you will be working on light deburring and you are looking for grit aggressiveness, try the medium grit level.
  4. Consider Conformability and Durability. The density options will be taken into consideration here. You have to vary the tightness of the wrap around the core depending on the density options. When we speak of density here, we are actually pertaining to the number of fibers compressed into the abrasive material. You can vary the density and flexibility depending on the diverse material used like titanium, glass, carbon steel, stainless steel, woods (hard and soft), and other non-ferrous metals. A density of 5 is considered soft and a density of 9 is considered hard, and both are available. Also, consider the conformability and durability when you decide the density. Lower density will surely provide conformability, while higher density delivers durability.
